Dental Hygiene

Helping you prevent problems before they begin

and understand how your general health influences

your oral health.

"I know dental visits can sometimes feel overwhelming or rushed, so creating a calm, welcoming, and supportive experience is incredibly important to me. I want patients to feel listened to, involved in their care, and comfortable asking questions."

Lucy Williams - Hygiene Therapist

At AK Dental Care, our approach is focused on preventative care and helping you maintain long-term oral health.

We are passionate about saving teeth and believe that many dental problems can be avoided or managed early with careful monitoring, clear advice, and the right support. By identifying small changes before they become bigger issues, we aim to reduce the need for more complex treatment wherever possible.

Our goal is never simply to 'clean teeth.'

It’s to help you:

  • Understand your oral health

  • Prevent problems before they develop

  • Feel confident in caring for your mouth at home

  • Maintain your teeth and gums for life

Meet Lucy Williams

Hygiene Therapist

I was born and raised in Northamptonshire and still live locally with my family, so it’s incredibly important to me to provide care that feels personal, supportive, and centred around the community I’ve always called home.

I’ve now been practising as a dental hygienist for nearly 15 years and have developed a particular passion for prevention and periodontal (gum) health. Since 2018, I have also worked within the Periodontal Department at Birmingham Dental Hospital, which has further strengthened my interest in helping patients understand and manage their long-term oral health.

Many people think of visiting a dental hygienist as simply having a 'scale and polish' - a quick clean to make the teeth feel fresher and look brighter. While that can certainly be part of what we do, modern dental care is about so much more than that.

My passion is prevention.

I believe oral health care should be personalised, supportive, and focused on helping you maintain a healthy mouth for the long term, not just treating problems once they appear.

What happens when I see the dental hygienist?

Every patient is different, so your appointment will be tailored to your individual needs.

Your appointment may include an assessment of your oral health, gums, teeth and oral soft tissues, including an oral cancer screening assessment. We may also assess factors such as plaque levels, gum inflammation, oral hygiene, existing dental work, implants, retainers and other factors that may influence your oral health.

We will discuss any concerns you may have, review factors that may affect your oral health, and explain our findings in a clear and supportive way.

Where appropriate, treatment may also be provided during the same appointment. This may include professional cleaning, stain removal, personalised oral hygiene instruction and preventive care tailored to your individual needs.

Our aim is not simply to assess your oral health or clean your teeth. We work with patients to help them understand their oral health, prevent disease, maintain existing dental treatment and support long-term oral health stability.

Direct Access at AK Dental Care
A modern, prevention-focused approach to oral health care

Direct Access allows patients to book an appointment directly with a Dental Hygienist without first seeing a dentist.

Introduced by the General Dental Council (GDC) in 2013, Direct Access provides patients with the opportunity to access preventive oral health care, gum health support, personalised advice, and treatment within a Dental Hygienist's scope of practice.

Direct Access can help patients better understand their oral health, identify potential risk factors, and take a proactive approach to preventing oral disease and maintaining a healthy smile.
