Direct Access at AK Dental Care
A modern, prevention-focused approach to oral health care
Direct Access allows patients to book an appointment directly with a Dental Hygienist without first seeing a dentist.
Introduced by the General Dental Council (GDC) in 2013, Direct Access provides patients with the opportunity to access preventive oral health care, gum health support, personalised advice, and treatment within a Dental Hygienist's scope of practice.
Direct Access can help patients better understand their oral health, identify potential risk factors, and take a proactive approach to preventing oral disease and maintaining a healthy smile.

How does Direct Access work at AK Dental Care?
At AK Dental Care, our Direct Access service is provided by our Dental Hygienists and is centred around prevention, education, gum health, and helping patients better understand the connection between oral health and overall wellbeing.
We believe that every patient is unique. Rather than focusing solely on treating problems when they arise, our aim is to help patients understand their oral health, identify potential concerns early, and provide personalised care and advice tailored to their individual needs.
Our approach goes beyond a traditional "scale and polish" appointment. We take time to understand your oral health, medical history, lifestyle factors, and personal goals so that we can work together to support your long-term oral health and wellbeing.
What happens during a Direct Access appointment?
Your appointment is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of your oral health and gum health, together with personalised preventive care and education.
Depending on your individual needs, your appointment may include:
✔️A comprehensive oral health and gum health assessment
✔️ Full periodontal (gum health) screening and analysis
✔️ Clinical photographs and digital scanning
✔️ Radiographs (x-rays) where clinically appropriate
✔️ Plaque scoring and oral hygiene assessment
✔️Discussion of medical, lifestyle, and oral health risk factors
✔️ Personalised preventive oral health treatment
✔️ Tailored home-care advice and recommendations
We will discuss our findings with you, explain any areas of concern, and help you understand the most appropriate next steps for maintaining and improving your oral health.
If further assessment or treatment is required outside the scope of a Dental Hygienist, we will discuss the most appropriate options and work collaboratively with one of our dentists or your own dental provider where needed.
