The Oral Health Series: Part 1 - Meet Lucy
Hello, I'm Lucy For those who haven't met me yet, I'd love to introduce myself and share a little about how I approach oral health care. ![]() I was born and raised in Northamptonshire and still live locally with my family, so providing care that feels personal, supportive and centred around the community I've always called home is incredibly important to me.
I've been practising as a dental hygienist for nearly 15 years and have a particular passion for prevention and gum health. Since 2018, I've also worked within the Periodontal Department at Birmingham Dental Hospital, where I've continued developing my knowledge of helping patients manage their long-term oral health.
Many people think a visit to the hygienist is simply about having a "scale and polish" to make their teeth feel cleaner. While that's certainly part of what we do, modern hygiene therapy is about so much more.
My passion is prevention.
I believe oral health care should be personalised, supportive and focused on helping you keep your teeth and gums healthy for life - not simply treating problems once they appear. Every patient is different, which is why I take time to understand not only your oral health, but also your general health, lifestyle and daily routines. Together, we can create an approach that's tailored specifically to you.
My goal is never simply to clean teeth.
It's to help you:
I know dental visits can sometimes feel overwhelming, so creating a calm, welcoming and supportive environment is something I care deeply about. I want every patient to feel listened to, involved in their care and comfortable asking questions.
Outside work, I enjoy walking, keeping active, reading and spending time at my allotment, although it's often more "work in progress" than picture perfect! I've always believed there's a close connection between our lifestyle, wellbeing and oral health, and that naturally influences the way I care for my patients.
What we'll be exploring togetherOver the next few months, I'll be sharing practical advice on topics including:
✔ Why prevention matters more than treatment ✔ Understanding gum disease and how to prevent it ✔ How tooth decay develops ✔ The link between oral health and your overall wellbeing ✔ Nutrition and your smile ✔ Everyday tips to improve your home care routine ✔ What modern hygiene therapy really involves Whether you're looking to improve your brushing routine, understand bleeding gums, or simply keep your smile healthy for the future, I hope these blogs will give you useful, evidence-based advice you can put into practice.
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to sharing the next piece with you. Lucy Williams Dental Hygienist at AK Dental Care |
